JOB SUMMARY: Supervise and perform administrative, research and technical duties of the laboratory; ensure that the laboratory has adequate supplies, properly maintained equipment and adequate staff; schedule work to meet experimental and publication deadlines, either directly or in conjunction with PI; communicate laboratory policies; evaluate instrument and experimental quality assurance
Develop work goals for the laboratory consistent with institutional and departmental goals and policy
May prepare laboratory work schedules.
Plan to achieve goals or establish priorities
Initiate changes or develop new policies, procedures and/or methods
Help laboratory to understand, share, and support the vision
Ensure the most effective operation of the laboratory
Develop laboratory guidelines
Maintain procedures manual
Evaluate new reagents and equipment.
Perform administrative duties
Supervise the production of routine to complex work of the laboratory
Perform test experiment procedures relating to laboratory activities.
Ensure financial resources are utilized effectively
Indirect budgetary responsibility depending on laboratory, may prepare the budget for approval by administration and monitor expenditures against the budget.
Anticipate the laboratory needs and order supplies
Ensure a safe, satisfying and enriching environment for employees
Supervise technical staff, technologists, students and laboratory activities
Coordinate, assign and review work of others as it relates to laboratory activity
Maintain personnel records and/or time sheets
Monitor payroll reports for overtime, sick time and vacation usage
Assure the development of people through orientation and training programs and through work experiences
Conduct performance reviews where applicable and ensure all other performance reviews are conducted in a timely manner
Counsel employees with regard to disciplinary actions taken in response to violations of institutional policies or contractual provisions
Conduct or originate staff meetings to develop resolutions to problems
Evaluate quality assurance standards, programs and procedures within the unit/laboratory
Ensure effective instrument/equipment use and quality control of laboratory
Ensure accuracy and reliability of tests/experiments.
Assist in Research and Development:
Develop new and modify existing methodology/protocols.
Perform, interpret and evaluate research
Assemble and compile research data for presentation and/or publication
Assist in collaborative efforts with other institutions and/or industry
Serve as resource to others concerning technical problems/procedures
Consult with students, faculty, fellows, technicians technologists, physicians and/or clinicians about unusual and/or difficult technical problems
Assist in performing and interpreting technical studies
Serve as consultant on technical problems.
Instruct departmental personnel and laboratory users on technical procedures
May prepare and present lectures or laboratory exercises; and coordinate guest lecturers
May evaluate and test students.
Manage the operation of the laboratory on a daily basis
Responsible for placing and managing lab orders
Create and manage electronic lab databases related to reagents, personnel, equipment, etc.
Supervise use and maintenance of equipment
Manage and maintain lab stocks of reagents
Ensure and monitor lab compliance with Vanderbilt, state, federal, and other applicable laws and regulations, including biological and chemical safety procedures
Ensure personnel compliance with safety and training requirements
Provide mentoring responsibility to personnel
Mentor and teach undergraduate and graduate students and post-doctoral fellows in developing their projects and on specific techniques and protocols.
Train and oversee technical staff, students, and postdocs
Provide technical guidance to students, post-doctoral fellows and faculty as required
Provide budget responsibility
Make recommendations to principal investigator regarding staff, supply and equipment needs for research projects
Monitor expenditures of funds
Independently oversee and execute research projects
Supervise, plan, design, implement, and execute research projects
Establish highly complex protocol(s); define data collection, evaluation and analysis procedures
Oversee scientific data collection and analyses for research project(s) requiring independent interpretation of complex research data
Exercise discretion and independent judgment to develop methods and procedures for operation of complex scientific equipment
Supervise set-up and operation of various scientific experiments involving complex apparatus and equipment
Contribute to research so as to merit serving as author or co-author on research publications, etc.
Assist principal investigator in writing research grants and contract proposals
Assists PI in manuscript preparation for scientific journals.
Present research findings as needed
Responsible for plan and coordination of literature and library searches and data collection programs
Develop reports of results, graphs, charts, tables, etc. of research findings
Supervise and perform writing, reviewing and editing of various materials for publication
Maintain open communication between department and others
Open contact as needed with principal investigator, collaborating professionals, Purchasing, Human Resource Services, Space and Facilities Planning, asset management personnel, Environmental Health and Safety, Institutional Review Board staff, administrative staff relating to budget capabilities
Contact as required with sponsoring agencies and/or cooperating facilities (e.g. V.A.), collaborating professionals and vendors
A high level of facility with working with computer databases and complex applications.
A high level of expertise in cell culture, including with primary cells (both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells).
A high level of experience with molecular biology cloning (such as bacterial transformation, bacterial DNA preparations, DNA/RNA blotting, PCR, Western blotting, sequence analysis) and with protein expression and purification.
A high level of expertise in characterization of protein-protein binding interactions (such as ELISA, Bio Layer Interferometry, and SPR).
Experience working in BSL2 and/or BSL3 environments.
Experience manipulating live viruses, ideally with viral propagation and neutralization assay experience.
Experience with flow cytometry.
Experience with small animal experiments, preferably using infectious agents.
Excellent oral and written presentation skills.
