Overview Northwest Permanente's Department of Pathology seeks an assistant director for our Molecular Pathology and Cytogenetics Laboratory. Our laboratory serves approximately 600,000 patients and offers a wide menu of testing services including next-generation sequencing. This position is located at the Airport Way Laboratory, Portland, OR. Qualifications: - PhD Degree in medical genetics or related field.
- Board certified/eligible in Clinical Cytogenetics and Molecular Genetics or Board Certified/Eligible in Laboratory Genetics and Genomics by ABMGG.
- Experiences with cancer chromosome analysis, microarray and NGS are highly desired.
Job Duties: The Assistant director for Molecular Pathology/Cytogenetics will interpret and report germline and somatic genetic and/or cytogenetic testing. They will lead new test validation studies as well as survey market trends and keep abreast of scientific developments in order to bring the highest quality lab testing to our members. The successful candidate will also simultaneously be engaged in stewardship efforts to reduce costs and promote efficient lab utilization. Our lab PhDs serve as consultants to our NWP physicians and outside contracted physician groups, reviewing patient charts and providing professional interpretations of results. Lab PhDs are integrated into all operational and technical aspects of lab testing, from pre-analytical collection, to result reporting. They will be familiar with the Lab information system (LIS) as well as the electronic medical record (EMR). Duties and Responsibilities: - Works collaboratively with the Health Plan team to achieve regional goals.
- Assures compliance with all state and federal regulations required for licensing and accreditation (CLIA, CAP, JTC, AABB, FDA, etc.)
- Recommends capital equipment as needed, providing appropriate justifications for utilization.
- Ensures the highest quality of care and service to patients and providers:
- Provide oversite of laboratory practice
- Participate in data collection and analysis of clinical outcomes
- Coordinate standardization of practice through the use of evidence based medicine and national clinical protocols
- Provide leadership in service improvement activities
- Ensure timely response to patient or physician complaints with Health Plan partners
- Review and evaluate resource utilization in the laboratory
- Participates in the diagnosis and medical management of patients according to expertise.
- Develops and oversees the education of medical staff, fellows, residents, and students.
- Reviews issues with quality control or other laboratory discrepancies resolving as appropriate; resolve technical problems and develop remedial action to be taken when significant deviation from established performance characteristics are identified.
- Appoints and delegates technical directors or technical specialists to oversee specific areas within the laboratory.
- Establishes, validates and maintains acceptable analytical test performances to include verification testing, accuracy, and implementation of new tests.
- Reviews proficiency testing results to ensure that corrective action is developed for all unsatisfactory results.
- Participates in strategic and budget planning including revenue enhancement opportunities.
- Participates in appropriate committee meetings and other group activities as needed.
- Constantly surveys market trends, laboratory costs and scientific developments in an effort to bring the highest quality of laboratory testing to our members while stewarding costs and efficient laboratory utilization.
- Serves as a consultant and facilitate communications with our NWP physicians/providers and outside contracted physician/provider groups, reviewing patient charts and providing professional interpretations of results.
- Oversees operational and technical aspects of laboratory testing, from pre-analytical collection, specimen transport, analytical testing, to effective result reporting.
- Is familiar with the laboratory information system (LIS) and electronic medical record (EMR) and works closely with information technology groups to build, repair, format and constantly update the LIS and EMR.
- Serves as the final authority for the implementation and quality of tests which they oversee.
- Participates as integral members of the physician group by serving as chair or member on the appropriate HP/NWP committees.
- Pursues outside academic and service opportunities, both nationally and in the community.
Applicants should have experience with NGS testing and/or cytogenetic testing including FISH.
