QUALIFICATIONS:
Board certified/eligible in gastroenterology
Appointed to active medical staff annually with clinical privileges in medicine, to include the care of adults with complex gastroenterological disease.
POSITION SUMMARY:
Provides professional diagnosis and treatment of gastroenterology conditions and diseases in the inpatient hospital setting. Provides inpatient gastroenterology consult services, diagnostics and interventions and performs emergent and non-emergent inpatient endoscopic procedures at Inova Hospitals as required.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Patient Care, Policies, Procedures, and Admission criteria : Adheres to patient care and admission criteria policies and procedures of the Department of Medicine and Inova Medicine Service Line.
Patient Care (inpatient consultative services, endoscopy): Provides direct hands-on care to patients within the limits of credentials granted by the Medical Staff at the individual hospitals of the Inova Health System in recognition of advanced training and experience in this field.
Administrative and/or Programmatic :
From time to time may be assigned to administrative tasks related to quality improvement projects related to clinic operations, inpatient services, endoscopy suite procedures.
Physician coverage and responsibilities : Serves as inpatient gastroenterology attending in accordance with a published schedule.
Quality Improvement
- Participates in regular quality improvement, peer review and cost saving activities in collaboration with other professional members of the health care team in the Medicine Service Line.
- In conjunction with the Inova GI Section Chief, administration, and nursing staff, acts as a patient advocate in monitoring, tracking, assessing and evaluating the quality of care.
- Supports the case management concept by:
- Assisting in setting service line goals
- Acting as change agent
- Supporting development, implementation and monitoring of clinical pathways
- Assists with developing quality monitors and conducting medical record review.
Medical Staff Liaison
The physician shall maintain communication with other interrelated medical and surgical services to facilitate cooperative interactions, appropriate standardization of equipment, documents, and practice and optimal patient care in the general service.
Medical and Nursing Staff Support
The physician shall provide consultation and educational support to residents and nursing staff.
Ancillary Service Liaison
The physician will maintain a working relationship with the staff of ancillary services (i.e. respiratory services, radiology, laboratory, pharmacy) involved in patient care in the hospital, to facilitate optimal delivery of services.
Billing Procedures
The physician adheres by the established billing procedures for clinical services provided to patients.
Medical Records/Billing
The physician will provide adequate information in the medical record and in the billing database to facilitate billing for professional services rendered to patients.
Other Administrative Duties
Other administrative duties may be assigned by the Inova GI Section Chief, and/or the Administrator or designee.
Medical Education
- Provides direct supervision of residents or fellows assigned to the gastroenterology service.
- Assists with the development of medical education programs for residents or fellows.
Continuing Medical Education
Participates in continuing medical education (CME) as approved by the Inova GI Section Chief
Medical Staff Bylaws and Regulations
Abides by the bylaws, rules and regulations of hospital medical staff.
Physician Credentialing and Privileges
Adheres to the Department of Medicine physician credentialing process.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
Reports to the Inova GI Section Chief or his/designee.
Annual formal evaluations (Ongoing Provider Performance Evaluations -OPPE) will be performed by the Inova GI Section Chief or designee with input from the Medicine triad leadership, nursing team, administrative staff, and other personnel with whom the physician interfaces as determined by the President.
