The Iowa City VA Health Care System (ICVAHCS) is currently recruiting for one (1) Full-Time Registered Nurse- BEHAVIORAL RECOVERY OUTREACH (BRO) position. The Behavioral Recovery Outreach (BRO) Registered Nurse falls under the clinical pathway, as a direct care nurse, and reports to the Nurse Administrator, Rehabilitation and Extended Care Service Line. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. Physical Requirements: The population of male and female veterans served ranges from the adult, age 18, to the elderly adult, age 65 and over. ICVAHCS is a major interdisciplinary teaching facility, serving medical, surgical, and neurological inpatients and outpatients. There is a large outpatient psychiatric population, with visits to the Emergency Department and admissions for medical co-morbidities. This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires up to the entire shift of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Incumbent is required to lift up to 45 pounds, as transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. This position potentially requires flexibility in schedule and assignments, as this is a 24/7 hospital. The BRO Team RN has a weekly or as needed presence on the Psych inpatient unit, which is critical for building relationships with interdisciplinary/nursing staff team members, obtaining behavioral assessment data, and trialing/modeling behavioral interventions. He or she, typically in collaboration with the BRO Team Psychologist, meets with inpatient staff partners to conduct behavioral assessments and develop behavior plans, and is responsible for ensuring that behavior plans are communicated across shifts and integrated into the resident's nursing care plan. This requires regular participation in formal (e.g. change-of-shift report, behavior rounds, IDT's, behavior huddles, etc.) and informal communication structures. He or she will take a leadership role in developing/encouraging inpatient nursing documentation of distressed behaviors, potential triggers/consequences, and the relative efficacy of non-pharmacological and pharmacological interventions. The BRO Team RN regularly meets with the other BRO Team members to discuss BRO Team patients and broader program development. The incumbent will lend his or her expert opinion on the Veteran's readiness to discharge to the community. He or she participates in the referral process by meeting with community partners who come to the inpatient to evaluate Veterans for placement. The BRO Team RN collaborates with the BRO Team on discharge planning to help maximize successful Veteran transitions to the community. He or she is heavily involved in day-ofdischarge activities, such as transporting the Veteran and/or his or her belongings to the facility, reassuring the Veteran during the transition, and meeting with community partners to discuss/model the Veteran's individualized behavior plan. The BRO Team RN participates in regularly scheduled and as-needed behavioral consultation with community partners. The BRO Team RN is responsible for introducing VA nursing leadership to behavioral programming and updating them on implementation progress or barriers. He or she must collaborate with nursing staff, Nurse Managers, and relevant leadership to problem-solve barriers faced in implementing behavioral programming in the community.
