The Registered Nurse provides professional care by diagnosing and treating human responses to actual or potential health problems through such services as case finding, health teaching, health counseling, and provision of care supportive to or restorative to life and well-being, and executing medical regimens prescribed by a licensed or otherwise legally authorized physician or dentist. The registered nurse will demonstrate professional integrity in accordance with the standards of care/practice and philosophy of Good Samaritan Hospital and the Department of Nursing.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Coordinates care for adult oncology patients in the ambulatory setting
- Safely administers chemotherapy, infusions and other oncology related treatments as per BSHSI policy and documents in the patient record.
- Educates patients and their families regarding medications, treatments, diagnostic testing and other aspects of oncology care.
- Participates in the charge process by entering and reviewing charges, working with the pharmacist to ensure that all medications are current in the billing system and by assigning appropriate diagnosis codes according to documentation in the patient record.
- Communicates with insurers, case managers, social services and other agencies as needed.
- Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to adult oncology patients in the ambulatory setting.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development of the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age, specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in departmental policies and procedures.
- Provides patient care to adult and geriatric patients.
- Participates in performance improvement projects.
- Assists with patient scheduling, maintenance of patient records, filing and correspondence.
- Assists with educational programs as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS:
Licensed to practice in New York State. Minimum of two years acute care nursing experience, at least one year of oncology/infusion experience required. Oncology Nursing Society oncology certification preferred.
EDUCATION:
Graduate of approved professional nursing program.
