The Minneapolis VA Health Care System is recruiting for 1 full-time Occupational Therapist (Clinical Specialist) for the Geriatrics and Extended Care Service Line. Grade Determinations: GS-13 Occupational Therapist (Clinical Specialist) Education, Experience, and Licensure. Completion of one year of experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level and directly related to the position being filled, which is defined as: Working knowledge of occupational therapy principles and techniques consistent with current clinical standards based on OT theory and evidence based practice. Knowledge is inclusive of physical, occupational, cognitive, and psychosocial functional deficits; Collaborating and communicating orally and in writing with all internal and external stakeholders; Using critical analysis, clinical reasoning, and creativity to independently solve complex problems related to adapting and modifying assessments, treatment plans, activities and procedures to meet the needs of patients; Procuring, fabricating, adjusting, adapting, and modifying orthoses, splints, and adaptive equipment for activities of daily living (inclusive of durable medical equipment); Conducting OT related in-service and clinical training. and one of the following: (a) A minimum of 2,000 hours of clinical practice directly in the advanced practice area. This time must be within the past five years; (b) Certification in an area recognized by the AOTA; (c) Completion of a fellowship/residency or advanced degree program in the advanced practice area; or (d) An additional advanced degree in a related field. Demonstrated KSAs. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs: -Knowledge of contemporary occupational therapy across multiple areas of practice. -Ability to provide clinical guidance in the advanced practice area to other OT practitioners. -Knowledge of advanced specialized evaluation, interventions and services to independently develop treatment strategies for area of specialization. -Skill in developing protocols and procedures for intervention programs based on current occupational therapy theory, recent research, and practice. -Ability to provide consultation to other health care practitioners and outside groups about occupational therapy scope of practice for area of specialization. -Ability to implement, revise/update evidence based occupational therapy services and programming in area of specialization. This is a Complexity Level 1a facility with a National Polytrauma Rehabilitation Center (PRC), a Spinal Cord Injury and Neurological Disease Center (SCI/D), an Amputation Regional Center (ARC), a Polytrauma Transitional Rehabilitation (PTRP) program and a Polytrauma Network Site (PNS). This is a 1.0 FTEE position assigned to outpatient hand services. Incumbent holds and maintains a certified hand therapy (CHT) certification. Primary assignment is to the Orthopedic department working on a team with orthopedic hand surgeons, residents, and other providers serving post-surgical and complex upper extremity diagnoses. Therapist serves as part of a multidisciplinary treatment team. Secondary assignment is to the general outpatient hand services and inpatient hand consultation as census requires. CHT works in conjunction with surgeons to develop and follow protocols while following clinical practice guidelines. The CHT responsibilities are focused on maximizing performance of Activities of Daily Living (ADL's) and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL's). Treatment may include physical modalities, complex orthotic creation and management, wound care management and treatment, therapeutic exercise training and education. Incumbent uses pain neuroscience education in the treatment of veterans and clinical training. Incumbent provides consultation to OT staff on UE treatment and interventions. Treats patients as needed with other staff who need assistance and specialty treatment interventions. Incumbent has an active role in the OT Hand Fellowship program as a mentor and clinical support. Incumbent will also supervise Level 2 and capstone OT students as assigned. Education and sharing of clinical expertise is highly encouraged and supported for the growth of the department and service to the veterans.
