Job Summary:
The Radiation Therapy Technologist is responsible for technical work involving the operation of complex radiation therapy equipment and the proper planning, positioning and treatment of patients in the Radiation Medicine Division of the Westchester Medical Center. The Radiation Therapy Technologist independently performs both radiation therapy including the use of Linear Accelerators, Simulators and the performance of teletherapy and brachytherapy, and stereotactic radiosurgery. Partial supervision may be exercised over technical and clerical support staff in the way of quality control of work. Does related work as required.
Responsibilities:
* Positions and monitors patients and treatments to assure safety and accuracy, remainingalert to patients reactions to treatment and changes in physical and mental status, and alerting Radiation. * Therapist to significant reactions and changes, accommodates emergent radiation treatment as needed off hours or weekends.* Operates specialized radiological equipment and machinery such as Linear Accelerators, Simulators.* Performs radiotherapy procedures such as brachytherapy, teletherapy, and stereotactic radiosurgery.* Checks machinery regularly to ensure proper functioning, including pressure, temperature, and water level readings for quality assurance and troubleshoots equipment failure, makes repairs where possible.* Takes portal images and CBCT (Cone Beam CT), takes measurements and contours, and photographstreatment fields.* Assists with treatment planning and basic dose calculation and consults with referring physicians as required.* Interprets computerized treatment plans including use of immobilizing and blocking, and carries out physician's prescription dose.* Provides training and technical direction to lower level technicians in procedures and processes.* Maintains scheduling records including appointment time, number of patients, number of treatments, number of fields, number of images, and patient flow through treatments and patient chart evaluation.* Keeps treatment rooms stocked with necessary supplies, and in clean and orderly condition.* Insures compliance with radiation safety rules and regulations for self-protection as well as for patients and other staff members.* May assist in clinical instruction of student technologist.* Attends meetings and conferences as required.Qualifications/Requirements:
Experience:
3 years of experience in a hospital radiation oncology department or a private Radiotherapist Office where the primary function of the position is in performing radiation oncology treatments, including the operation of radiation therapy equipment such as Linear Accelerator, and Simulators.
Education:
Must hold a Bachelor's Degree of Science in Radiological Sciences.
Licenses / Certifications:
Possession of a valid license and current registration, issued by the New York State Health Department, as a Radiologic Technologist in the field of Radiotherapy; Substitution: Certification and current registration with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in the field of Radiation Therapy Technology may be substituted for one year of the above experience.Special Requirements: Thorough knowledge of the techniques and procedures used in radiation therapy; good knowledge of human anatomy; ability to operate most of radiation therapy equipment; analytical ability to assist in treatment planning, and to interpret physicians prescription for dose and radiation treatment plan; ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written directions; ability to direct and instruct others; ability to deal effectively with patients, their families and other members of the professional and non-professional staff; visual acuity; numerical ability to perform dose calculations; ability to handle sick and injured patients properly; thoroughness; reliability; good judgment;
