Summary:
The Lead Phlebotomist assists in the delegation of work duties for the phlebotomists. The Lead phlebotomist also performs the duties of a phlebotomist. The phlebotomist obtains blood specimens, assists with collection of non-blood specimens, prepares specimens for processing in house and reference laboratory testing, and performs functions associated with test ordering. The phlebotomist also performs general clerical duties within the laboratory department. The phlebotomist works under the direct supervision of the manager.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Knows related policies and procedures.
- Assists in the delegation of work duties for the phlebotomists.
- Assists in the ordering of supplies.
- Performs venous and capillary punctures to obtain blood specimens for patients of all ages. Obtains the correct collection tubes/devices and assures special requirements for collection are executed.
- Performs Arterial punctures appropriately.
- Prioritizes collection request according to priority. Assures the timely collection of all pending orders.
- Treats patient with respect and provides age appropriate skills.
- Assist in the process of collecting non-blood specimens.
- Prepares specimens for processing according to procedures.
- Assures test orders are valid and contain all necessary components. Assures all orders are collected appropriately.
- Performs computer functions to process test orders including test ordering printing labels, recording correct collection and receipt times, crediting/ cancelling orders, and patient inquiry functions. Troubleshoots orders and provides proper communication to the clinician as appropriate.
- Prepares reference laboratory specimens for pick up according to procedures.
- Distributes and faxes patient reports at appropriate time according to procedures.
- Communicates with fellow phlebotomists to assure efficient and effective completion of work assignments.
- Troubleshoots testing orders for possible duplication or timing issues. Communicates with the caregiver as appropriate.
- Calls patient results to the appropriate areas as directed.
- Follows customer service procedures.
- Documents information as directed on the appropriate log sheets.
- Notifies the supervisor when supplies are low.
- Assists in the training of newly hired phlebotomists and training program students as necessary.
- Serves as the charge phlebotomist as needed. Assures duties are performed efficiently and effectively. Directs phlebotomy staff as appropriate. Assures staffing levels are sufficient.
- Notifies the supervisor of issues or concerns in a timely manner.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS:
Experience:
Previous phlebotomy experience preferred.
Education:
Completion of phlebotomy program required.
Licenses / Certifications:
Certification from the National Health Career Association or American Society of Clinical Pathologists preferred.
